The world is opening its eyes to the word ORGANIC. Finally! More and more organic fruits and vegetables and other foods are becoming more the norm. With the growing rate of obesity over the past decade people are starting to say enough. In America the next generation is the first generation that is predicted to not out live their parents ranging in an age gap between 28-35years old of life expectancy due to lack of education when it comes to unhealthy food choices and lifestyle. Who are we to blame? The individual…incorrect. Look in the mirror my friends, as a community, a society it is our responsibility to help educate our neighbors, friends and loved ones about simple lifestyle choices that add years to one’s life.

On the plus side we’re all taking action! The Laws have been passed and it’s now mandatory for restaurants, grocery stores and even the unhealthy guilty pleasure fast food chains to post nutritional labels on the items or posted at the restaurant. Eating healthy is a 75% contribution to living a healthy life and 25% is based on fitness. That’s huge!!! There is nothing wrong with a little sweet tooth here or there but everything within moderation. Treat yourself once a week as a reward for good behavior. Remember eating healthy and exercising go hand and hand so maximize your life line and fulfillment!

Just some food for thought.

Alright so not everyone has time to go to the gym. I get it…between running your household, taking care of your kids (husband included,) after school activities and homework; there aren’t always a whole lot of extra hours left in the day.

I’ve got a great solution…simple exercises you can do at home or in your own backyard! After gaining over 50lbs with my daughter, I faced the same challenges you are when it came to dropping the pounds after baby.   While adjusting to motherhood, the days of endless hours and loads of energy quickly seemed to disappear I grew tired of feeling…well tired. As a result I made a decision that I needed to make myself a priority…not just for me but everyone’s sake. I decided to take 15minutes a day by exercising. Sometimes it was spread out throughout the day in to 2 times, other times I found ways to incorporate my baby girl.  I immediately noticed my energy levels improve and my sleep (even with the middle of the night feeding times.) Even if its only 10-15minutes a day, I created safe & simple exercise programs you can do in minutes with great results…If I can do it…trust me…you can too! Above is a picture of my daughter and I performing a baby crunch…doesn’t look that bad now does it!

Getting the whole family to stay active and healthy doesn’t always have to be as difficult as you think. Some of the best ways to stay close as a family are to do things together; including exercise and have fun while doing it. The Canada Active Living Guide recommends 30 minutes of moderate exercise everyday to stay healthy and fit. Below are some ideas to make it fun for the whole family and get you off to a “running” start to staying active together.

 Family Hike/Walking Adventure

Take the family to the local park or a wooded trail for a hike/walk. Make it fun by adding the task of a scavenger hunt to the hike/walk. Write a list, and you all have to do your best to find the items on it. Be creative, ex. Pine cones, leafs, rocks, spot a bird or a squirrel etc. Make each adventure a little bit more challenging by picking a new trail that might be slightly more difficult or add fun mini races against each other throughout the hike making it a little harder.

 Swimming

Going to your local pool is great exercise for every one of all ages and is a fun day for the whole family. Make it fun by showing your little ones the doggy paddle, blowing bubbles or the back stroke depending on age. This is the perfect activity to do together and get’s those muscles working all the while.

Biking

Going for a bike ride is a great cardio workout and strengthens not only your legs but your core. If you don’t all own a bike you can rent them at your local bike store for fairly in expensive for either a day fee or a couple hours. Take the bikes to local trails and everyone can get some fresh air and enjoy the scenery together.

Playing Together

It doesn’t matter if you go to the soccer field and have a family scrimmage and kick the ball around, play tennis or basketball as a family or even go to the park and play grounders or tag on an open field. Either way you are incorporating exercise and having fun at the same time.

These are just some basic ideas that kick start your kids off to a healthy active lifestyle without even realizing it. As an added bonus these suggestions won’t break the bank and you’ll get to workout with the whole gang together.
